I’ve officially started therapy. That’s not easy to admit, which is why I want to continue working to de-stigmatize mental health care. To that end, I decided to explain what are known as the 10 Cognitive Distortions. These are lenses in which we view and analyze the world that commonly lead to inaccurate, toxic, and dangerous thoughts. Jumping to conclusions, over-generalization, discounting the positive… all examples of distortions that twist the reality of what you’re receiving. These occur with major life events like break ups/heartbreak/divorce or losing a job, as well as everyday occurrences like traffic or getting snubbed on the street. Knowledge is power, and with an understanding of these 10 things, hopefully you’ll be prepared to fend off the distortions when they inevitably present themselves.

    I've heard someone say that she likes to go to a therapy session once a year even though she doesn't struggle with mental illness or have challenges in her life that she can't handle. She considers it a mental health check-up that is just as important as going in for a dental cleaning or a physical.

    oh my god, this like just the same as stoicism! As a 15 years old girl, one of my awesome teacher told me to read or learn about stoicism. No, I'm not a stoic, but I'm trying to get better and better with the guide of stoicism! I really recommend it, but also try to find the 'easy' one.

    I've been thinking lately that a lot of people at work treat staff meetings as group therapy. Maybe we should have group therapy on work time, run by a trained professional therapist. It would help everyone and make staff meetings more productive. It's painfully obvious people need this. Remove the stigma. Maybe everyone needs therapy to some extent?

    I'm not normally victim to some of these for 29 days of every month, but I swear, for one or two days about 2-5 days before a period, something really distorted happens, and it freaks me out. After my period starts, though... It's like it never happened, thankfully. But, for those 24-48 hours, I'm a mess. I don't even recognize myself. I get super quiet and dive right down into my own dark self. I barely talk to my husband in that time. I don't think he's ever noticed either, tbh. LOL

    The biggest thought pattern people have that is destructive, people think they have free will and their decisions were Theirs to make. The brain automatically makes decisions on your behalf, and before you realizing it your body's already going through the motions. Like when people say, their body moves on their own, and they were just a spectator. If a person takes responsibility for unconscious decisions, they're considered sane and responsible for those actions. If a person does not take responsibility for their subconscious decisions, they're labeled insane or having mental illness. Who is right, and who is perceiving reality for what it really is?

    I had to see a handful of therapists while in the military and unfortunately they’re generally not very effective. I’ve known countless others who had the same issue. Therapy can help you short term getting over certain hurtles, but it doesn’t seem to do much for your overall mental health. Hope the fields improve going forward.

    Long time ago I had a life experience that most people would call traumatic. I tried a few therapists, but I need practical solutions as well as help with the mental impact. I remember being asked what I wanted to accomplish in therapy by one counselor. I told them that I wanted to pay my bills on time. Money was tight, but that wasn't the main reason. I just didn't need another thing to worry about. They responded that they didn't know how they could help me with that. Didn't last long. Some are more helpful than others. You want to find a good match, and I have found a couple through the years which were great for me at the time. Not too long ago I started seeing one I used to visit. Tired, run down, wanting to accomplish too much and accomplishing too little. I visited for a while but decided I needed to make more of a difference in my life. Food, exercise, more daylight. Prioritizing. So I moved to a career/life coach. Unfortunately not something insurance covers even partially. Been focusing a lot on eating more, exercising (at least walking), taking D3 and B12, getting help with housework so I can focus on other things. Working towards my PMP again. If I cannot accomplish my goals each day, at least I am tracking what I have accomplished. One thing I didn't prioritize but will get done before the end of September is an annual physical with bloodwork focusing on some issues I get at least seasonally, SADD, D3 deficiency, B-12 deficiency, pollen allergies and GERD that make it difficult to eat without vomiting when it gets bad. Just as emotions can impact physical health, physical illnesses can impact emotional health. Thanks Doctor Mike. It isn't easy to share, but it helps others who may feel very alone.

    Another toxic thought is on social media, if a person just likes a post. Some people, and I've done it, can't help but think about why did they only like it? Why didn't they comment if the post was a serious post or an emotional post? If I ask for people's opinions on something and they like the post, they clearly saw the post and liked it then why didn't they comment? Or If I texted or messaged a person and they saw it why didn't they respond in my time when I wanted them to? I saw this person post something to their Instagram story or it says their "online" but why won't they respond? We don't owe everyone all of our time or to respond to serious things in their time. Sure it would be nice, it might be appropriate, sometimes I want to wait until I'm sitting down or at home to respond to serious messages or think about how I want to respond. But I might casually scroll on Instagram for a few moments before doing that. I don't know, just another thought

    your therapist has a therapist! Why? BC this is part of self care! Things can get confusing & when you have someone who can help you, help you- what's to be embarrassed about? If you have an ingrown toe, you head to the podiatrist. But if you have no motivation and you beat yourself up for everything and that's been going on for quite some time you would want to see someone who is trained in recognizing depression someone who has the training to see the bigger picture as it relates to your mental health. There should be zero stigma. Zero. Stigma. Brain = organ = can malfunction= see someone! 😍💙💗💙☺

    I’ve wondered for a long time why my body strives for balance & homeostasis. While my brain is self destructive & always turns to bad habits.     Thank you for making this video about going to therapy and the importance of mental health! It is a crucially important topic and it would be great if more people could talk about it (especially when it comes to personal experiences) to help end the negative stigmatization of mental health problems. Most people aren't particularly shy to admit problems they have with their heart/lungs/gut/......, it should be the same with mental health.

    I'm so proud of you @Dr.Mike It's really hard to fight the stigma on this topic but completely necessary. I'm currently taking a medical leave of absence from work for my mental health 😊 And I'm working very hard at reversing some of the negative thought patterns myself.     This is how I can't sleep First is after I remove my phone then suddenly I wanna use it again And if I decided to not use it and try to sleep I get bored Then I get itchy Then I get scared and think of scary stuff Then I feel like a cockroach is touching me Then If a cockroach does show up and it fly towards me My adrenaline will pop up run the flip if I touch me i will run like sonic the hedgehog Then after it go away My Eyes again Wide Open Then I think about death Then boom I use phone again to remove those stuff in my mind and repeat the process and boom until I don't feel my eyes become heavy I can't sleep. Lol

    I'm so happy for you that you're brave enough to go to therapy and tell us about it! sadly lots of people still see that as weakness but it isn't! it's the same as going to a doctor like you because you have a flu or broken something or whatever the only difference is that we can't see or touch mental health so people have problems to really be aware of it so I think it's really great, when people like you, who has so many followers and viewers, show that it can happen to everyone! and that it's totally okay to see a therapist! me, I'm in therapy for a long time and right now planing another stay at the psychiatristic clinic I'm totally a part of group 10 like you! a lot of people have that problem as they don't want to be arrogant it's reall difficult to get over those thoughts!

    The secret I taught myself a long time ago is to just not care. It's kinda like apathy with less steps. Someone doesn't like me? Whatever. This definitely doesn't apply to everyone and the the principle is easier than the practice, but it's just the way it is.
