Doctor Reacts To NEW AMSTERDAM Plane Crash Episode

New Amsterdam is a very entertaining medical drama, and their recent season 3 premiere didn’t hold back on the excitement, as we witness a passenger jet make an emergency landing on New York City’s East River, similar to Sully Sullenberger’s miracle on the Hudson. Just because the show is exciting doesn’t mean it’s medically accurate though, so I dove in to assess the reality of what a large-scale trauma emergency would look like. A few moments here left me scratching my head, such as the high improbably case of a plane’s antifreeze preventing a wound from clotting, and why a hospital would ever intentionally hide a patient from law enforcement. If there are any pilots out there, please chime in and let me know how accurate the airplane material was!

From a Law Enforcement stand point (In my state as I know it), we often do search warrants for BAC in DUI investigations. Also in the event of a major accident a warrant is often written for the toxicology report from the hospital for any identifiers that could have contributed to the accident.

These shows all have in common: that ALL doctors perform surgeries and do EVERYTHING. Like Dr. House show doctors doing all their own surgeries and lab tests and specialties...etc etc. Just can't watch these shows...drives me nuts. Also: 2:10 Distended Neck Viens (JVD) wouldn't set in 30 minutes after an accident. Takes a lot longer than that.

I started a good medical game on mobile called Reanimation inc. its about you, a doctor in the hospital who goes to patients, and you have to evaluate their case, and decide to take them to the hospital or leve them at home, and also try to give a tratment to them, it says its not supposed to be educational, but i think, its worth a review, also, im very good at it, i caused tachycardia in about 5-6 patients because i defibrillated them when i didn't need to.

  51. Sophia Thore

    Uukausi sitten

You can have a dissection without an aneurysm. Its kind of a misnomer to call it "dissecting aneurysm". Dissection means that the blood dissects into the vessel wall and creates a false lumen. This can happen without a previous dilation (aneurysm) of that vessel.

    Uukausi sitten

imo i dont think the anti-freeze wont do that much, maybe only scar his abdomen because the wing seems to be the first one that touched the water which would've slow down the speed before the nose falls down. Pipes within the insides are tightened and secure and will take more force than the one seen to even shoot it into the guys abdomen. It's mostly electronics found in the front of the aircraft and I'm pretty sure theres no pipes on the cone and mostly electronics. So realistically, the anti-freeze pipe wont do anything wrong to him because you cant take it out that easy in a soft crash like that, mostly head injuries but the whole crew are ready for it and at most nobody will be that wounded. They should atleast make it a more dramatic crash instead of a fail sully landing.

Regarding 'beards' -- perhaps it's more a female 'thing,' yet during the months on end of COVID-19 protocols I have seen 'quarantine/lockdown' beards e v e r y w h e r e! Most especially on procedural and late-night comedy shows. Soooo tired of them. ¡Basta! A nearby hospital operates with an estimated 200+ beds. Prior to the pandemic all rooms were singles. With multiple Nursing stations there was a "Hospitalist" assigned to approx 6-7 patients. THIS was the strength and power of the business... "...since when do Hospitalists have a conversation about something very important, like hospital funding, in hall- ways..." ??? If my PCP visited, then charted new orders, Dr. HMO*, aka 'hospitalist' was free to change or cancel MY Dr's orders. He is free, at will, to make any change he likes. What kind of care is that?

    • Ihdc1

      Uukausi sitten

Hospitalists are trained PCPs as well. If they disagree with another PCP's decision after seeing you, they are authorized to change it. They're not nurses who are bound to follow the doctor's orders to the letter.

As a pilot, the plane crash scene made me so mad. That was the most unrealistic bank ever done. They literally took the Sully story and put it in the East River and had a few people die. Also, what the pilot said about the airspeed indicator, he literally described what you would do for a STALL. When I took my training course for the Boeing 737 (The same plane type they showed in the show) I was taught that if all the other sensors are working (altitude, weather, autopilot, etc.) remain on the current flight plan. If any caution warnings sound, I would make an emergency landing hopefully at an airport.
